The most adequate access is through the Mirador or viewpoint of El Fito; you can go up to the Cruz or Cross of Pienzu, the upper limit of the Sierra, but only 5 km far from the sea, which makes it one of the highest peak so near the sea in all the world. From there you have a splendid view: to the north, you can see all the coast, from the Cabo (Cape) Peñas to the province of Cantabria; to the south, the majestic high peaks of the Picos de Europa. In this land the primitive autochthonous woods are still preserved, with holly, birch trees, oak trees, yew trees... Among its fauna, the most remarkable is the mythical asturcón horse, an autochthonous Asturian breed. |

Colunga is situated in the middle of the so-called "route of the dinosaurs", which runs along the coast from Tazones to Ribadesella. In it, there surface sedimentary formations dating back from the Secondary Era, which retain the footprints of dinosaurs. The most important remains found in the municipality are located in the cliffs of Lastres and at the Beach of la Griega, where there is one of the greatest footprints found up to date in Asturias. |

Up to the present time, the municipality has three signalled routes, of the kind called "small distance" (P.R.: Pequeño Recorrido) routes. The route of Gobiendes (P.R. AS-135), route of La Riera (P.R. AS-136) and route between beaches (P.R. as-134). The distance for all of them is between 5 and 6 km, and it takes approximately one hour and a half to complete each of them. The terrain is easy to walk around, and these routes allow us to enjoy the most beautiful villages and places through which they pass. One of the most beautiful routes to travel over is the stretch of the route Saint Jacques or pilgrims way to Santiago de Compostela, which passes through the municipality, from the river Espasa to La Llera. |
